If you have been looking for a remote job lately, it may feel like there are fewer options than there used to be.
That does not mean remote work is disappearing. It does mean the market has changed.

More companies are bringing employees back to the office, increasing hybrid requirements, or limiting fully remote roles to certain teams and locations. In some cases, employers still offer flexibility, but they are being more specific about where people can live and when they need to be available. That can make remote jobs feel harder to find, even when they are still out there.
At the same time, plenty of companies still hire remotely.
The difference is that fully remote jobs can attract a lot of applicants, which makes the search feel more competitive. Job seekers may need to be more targeted, more patient, and more realistic about what remote work looks like today. In many cases, the best opportunities are not always labeled as work from anywhere.
You may also see more listings that include restrictions such as:
Remote within the U.S.
You can work remotely, but only from approved states.
Remote within a time zone
The company may want employees available during Eastern, Central, Mountain, or Pacific hours.
Remote with occasional travel
You work from home most of the time but may need to attend meetings or company events.
Hybrid
You work remotely part of the week and in an office for the rest.
Work from anywhere
This is much less common and usually means the employer can legally hire employees in multiple locations or countries.
Remote work is not gone. It is simply becoming more specific. That means job seekers may need to look beyond the word "remote" and pay closer attention to location rules, schedules, and how often employees are expected to be in person. It also helps to stay open to hybrid roles or remote jobs with some limitations, especially if the position is still a strong fit overall.
The remote market may look different than it did a few years ago, but flexible work is still very much part of the job market.
